A lot of Australia’s leading chefs have come together to launch a campaign for genetically modified food to be clearly labeled.
Stephanie Alexander, Quay Restaurant’s Peter Gilmore, Neil Perry, Maggie Beer and dozens of others from across the country say Australians deserve the right to know what they’re eating.
The campaign is being supported by Greenpeace who say GM food grown in Australia is due to enter our food supply this year.
GM canola is now being grown on Australian soil, and is set to enter thousands of common foods through canola oil and meal.
"It concerns me that this next generation of environmentally-aware consumers may not be able to enjoy GM-free food in the future," said Stephanie Alexander.
"At least it is imperative that any GM produce be so labeled."
Under existing Australian law, food containing GM products does not need to be labeled. Research shows that the majority of Australian consumers do not want to eat GM food, with more than 90% supporting the full labellings of all products containing GM ingredients. There are also serious concerns about long-term safety and environmental impacts.
