A MELBOURNE bar has won an award for the best cocktail list in the world at an annual gathering in New Orleans. 1806 — in Exhibition Street Melbourne beat Sydney's Bayswater Brasserie and seven other bars from New York, London, Vienna and Copenhagen and took out the award at the Tales of the Cocktail festival last week. "We found out we were short listed about six weeks ago but decided not to go because we honestly thought we didn't have a chance," Owner Sebastian Reaburn said yesterday. "We saluted with our cups of tea over breakfast and then I rushed off to a study group, which is made up of about 15 other bartenders," he said. "We just so happened to be discussing white rum that night, so I celebrated again with a drop we were tasting." 1806 opened in October and is the first Melbourne bar to receive an award at the festival. Mr Reaburn believes it is not only a sign of his success, but also of Melbourne's growing reputation. "People in the industry now talk about New York, London and Melbourne as the best cocktail cities in the world, so we're certainly out there," he said. Mr Reaburn worked for a year to create the bar's cocktail list, which follows a timeline from 1806 — when the word cocktail was first defined in print. His top-selling drink is Aviation but he is chilling some champagne for when his trophy arrives. "I think some champagne cocktails are definitely in order," he said. View recipe for cocktails.
