Wine and cheese have gone hand in hand for years; although, with today’s many different choices for both wines and cheese the pairing decisions can be confusing. So, here is a handy guide to give you a starting point for pairing your favorite wines with cheeses. These are just recommendations, so experiment with your own pairings and see if there’s a combination, that you like. A few tips to keep in mind: Pairing wines and cheeses from the same region is a good, place to start wine and cheese combinations. For example, a lovely Italian Chianti and a strong Parmesan will provide a fantastic mix. Also, remember that the harder types of cheese (i.e.Cheddar or Parmesan) can handle more tannic wines. While creamy cheeses, such as Brie, typically pair better with wines that have more acidity, like a Chardonnay. Give salty cheeses a sweet wine partner (i.e. Blue Cheese and Port). Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with: Camembert, Cheddar, Danish Blue, Gorgonzola, Parmesan and Roquefort. Chardonnay pairs well with: Brie, Goats cheese, Camembert and Provolone. Champagne pairs well with: Beaufort, Brie, Camembert and Cheddar. Shiraz pairs well with: Cheddar, Edam, Gouda and Parmesan. And remember this is just a guideline, so have fun and experiment with your own pairings. Watch video of cheese and wine pairings.
